Sometimes I get caught up in the day to day biz of photography and forget what hooked me in the first place.  Don’t get me wrong – I still love taking shots of families and weddings and babies and all the stuff that goes with that but sometimes I feel like I have to check in with my inner photography child.  I do this by taking my camera just out my front door.  I usually don’t go very far before I see something that I walk by everyday and pay no attention to and suddenly with a camera in my hand, I must have a photo.

I try also to do something that my inner photography child like to do and experiment.  Here’s a shot that I purposely took out of focus.  I love the softness and the mix of colors.

Here’s what it looks like in focus –

There is nothing earth shattering about these photos but they help me remember.  My camera is a powerful tool for me in that.  When I take a photo, it helps me preserve a memory in time.  But when I also want to remember why I started this journey and how far I’ve come, I can go back to taking photos in my front garden and get that old magic back – the magic of singling out one thing and finding beauty in the simplicity.
